To encourage VU and VUmc researchers to publish in Open Access the University Library has made OA arrangements with a number of major publishers thus enabling VU and VUmc scientists to publish their articles OA free of charge (100% APC discount) or with an APC discount (e.g. 15% APC discount) in high quality journals. APC stands for Article Processing Charge. Currently more than 8,000 journals are included in the OA-arrangements, of which more than 4,000 titles have an impact factor with more than 1,000 in the 1st quartile.

American Chemical Society (ACS)
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in 57 ACS journals. This does not include the ACS Central Science en ACS Omega journals. Authors wil automatically receive an ACS Author Choice Open Access License.after acceptance of their manuscript. VU and VUmc employees are recognized based on their VU or VUmc e-mail address at submission.
A discount of 15% is available for BioMed Central and Springer Open article-processing charges (APCs) for all VU and VUmc staff. If you submit your manuscript from an IP address at the VU or VUmc the membership discount will be automatically applied. If you submit your manuscript using a non-registered IP address you should choose the option “I believe that I am covered by an institutional membership arrangement” and select your institution from the drop-down list on the APC agreement page. Researchers from VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in more than 300 journals published by Brill . When submitting an article in one of these journals, corresponding authors can specify that they wish to publish their article as Open Access. When submitting an article, the author must use the university email address or his/her ORCID. Authors can also request to publish Open Access via email@example.com.

British Medical Journal / BMJ Journals
A discount of 25% is available for article-processing charges (APCs) in all BMJ journals for VU and VUmc staff. During submission, you will be recognized as a corresponding author of VU and/or VUmc by your institutional e-mail address.
Researchers of the VU and VUmc can now publish Open Access free of charge in the journals published by Cogitatio Press, an open access, academic publisher specialized in peer-reviewed journals. Cogitatio publishes four journals, Media and Communication , Politics and Governance , Social Inclusion and Urban Planning. VU and VUmc employees are recognized based on their VU or VUmc e-mail address at submission and will receive confirmation that the fee is paid by the institution.
Cambridge University Press
Researchers of the VU and VUmc can publish open access in 339 hybrid and 17 open access journals of Cambridge University Press. The APC is waived after the corresponding author indicates his/her affiliation after acceptance. An ‘Apply Discount’ button will appear by which the OA procedure is confirmed. The agreement is valid until December 31st 2020.
Corresponding authors from VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in a selection of more than 2,000 hybrid and full open access Elsevier journals.
You can find out whether or not a journal is included in the selection by looking it up in the VU Journal Publishing Guide. When doing so, ensure that you note the conditions imposed with regard to the submission date, as this varies by journal and is indicated separately for each title. Articles submitted before this date do not qualify for free open access publication.
If the article is accepted, you will receive an email with a link to Elsevier’s authoring system, where you can specify that you are affiliated with a Dutch university and select the Gold Open Access option. You can also select a Creative Commons licence. VU Amsterdam’s preference is for the CC-BY 4.0 licence.

Note: all vouchers for 2020 have already been issued.
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can make limited use of vouchers for Open Access publishing in Emerald journals to which VU has a current subscription. The number of vouchers is finite, all vouchers for 2020 have already been issued. You can no longer apply for pre-paid APC’s.
How does it work ?
While submitting you can choose the option "yes, I want to publish my article as Open Access and my institution is a prepaid APC voucher" in the Emerald submissions system on the Emerald APC webpage. After acceptance of the article you will receive a message whether you are eligible for a free voucher. After completing and signing the CC-BY license, the Open Access article is published. You can find more information about the workflow here.
Karger Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in 110 Karger journals. The authors must provide a cover letter at submission referring to their authorized status.

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
Corresponding authors of VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in more than 200 hybrid Lippincott Williams & Wilkins journals. Full Open Access journals are excluded from this deal. When you submit your manuscript, LWW will inform you of the options for free Open Access publication and refer you to VU’s Open Access team . Here, you can request a waiver code that you can then use in LWW’s payment system to cover the publishing charges.
The University Library has signed an agreement with Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). Corresponding authors associated with the VU and VUmc will receive a 10% discount on the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Open Access publications. VU/VUmc employees are recognized on the basis of domain and IP address.
Oxford University Press
NOTE: The maximum number of vouchers for 2020 has been reached (4th December). As a consequence you can no longer publish Open Access free of charge under the VSNU agreement. OUP will offer you an open access option, but the costs will no longer covered by the open access agreement. This means that if choose to publish your article Open Access you will personally receive an invoice for the costs. You can read about the OUP workflow here. The University Library has signed an Open Access Membership Agreement with the Royal Society. As a result, from 1 March 2018, VU and VUmc researchers will receive a 25% discount on open access publishing costs for all peer-reviewed journals of the Royal Society.
You can request the discount if you are the corresponding author of the article. When submitting the manuscript, choose "Open Access publishing" and then select "VU University Amsterdam" from the list of Membership Institutions. The discount of 25% is granted by the Royal Society after verification by the library. Always use the e-mail address of your institution when submitting your manuscript.
Corresponding authors of VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in around 900 journals published by SAGE. During submission, your institutional email address will identify you as a corresponding author of VU Amsterdam and/or VUmc. Make sure, therefore, that you use the email address of your institution when you submit your manuscript. The publisher will send you a personal message asking you to fill out and return a form to make the article Open Access free of charge. The article will only be made Open Access free of charge if SAGE receives the form in good time. Once it has been published, the article can generally no longer be made Open Access.
For the 160+ SAGE Pure Gold open access journals a 20% reduction on open access publishing costs is offered. A special code is required for to claim this discount. To request the 20% discount for publication in SAGE's Pure Gold Access Journal, a special code is required. You can ask the library for this code. The code is requested at the time of payment of the APC. Depending on the journal, the author must answer the payment email with the code stating the VSNU agreement or, if the system allows, enter the code into the payment system and automatically apply the code. After publication, the discount can no longer be claimed.
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in ca. 1.850 journals in the Springer Open Choice program. The scheme applies retroactively from 1 January 2018 and runs until 31 December 2021.
If your article is accepted for publication you will be asked to confirm your affiliation (VU University Amsterdam / VU University Medical Center) in the “Special Affiliation” drop-down menu and to agree to the open access copyright and license terms. Not eligible for this arrangement are the titles of Learned Societies, BioMed Central and Springer Open. The journals from the Springer Open and BioMedCentral program are eligible for a 15% discount. For more information, see also BioMedCentral on this page.
Taylor & Francis en Routledge
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in ca. 2300 journals published by Taylor & Francis and Routledge.
During submission, you will be recognized as a corresponding author of VU and/or VUmc by your institutional e-mail address. It is therefore important to use the e-mail address of your institution on submission of your manuscript. You will receive an e-mail once your article has been accepted for publication with confirmation that the costs will be paid by the VSNU agreement. Walter de Gruyter
Corresponding authors of VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in more than 300 hybrid journals published by Walter de Gruyter. This does not apply to full Open access journals. You can find out whether or not a journal is included in the selection by looking it up in the VU Journal Publishing Guide . VU Amsterdam and VUmc employees are recognised by their VU/VUmc email address.
Corresponding authors receive a 20% discount on publication in 500 full open access peer-reviewed journals and OA books in the ‘De Gruyter Open Access Institutional Member Scheme’. The discount also applies to book chapters and book series.
Corresponding authors of VU Amsterdam and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in around 1,400 journals published by Wiley. To take advantage of this deal, once your article is accepted for publication, you must select VU Amsterdam or VUmc on the ‘author services’ page in the ‘Funder/Institution Payment’ menu. This indicates that the charges will be paid under the VSNU agreement. Please note: Wiley also publishes a number of full Open Access journals. These journals are not covered by this deal.
