To encourage VU and VUmc researchers to publish in Open Access, the University Library has made arrangements with several publishers offering VU and VUmc scientists a discount on publication costs, and in some cases the possibility of publishing Open Access free of charge. Currently more than 8000 journals are included in the agreements, of which more than 4,000 titles have an impact factor with more than 1,000 in the 1st quartile. American Chemical Society (ACS)
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in 57 ACS journals. This does not include the ACS Central Science en ACS Omega journals. Authors wil automatically receive an ACS Author Choice Open Access License.after acceptance of their manuscript. VU and VUmc employees are recognized based on their VU or VUmc e-mail address at submission.
In 2015 the University Library became a Supporting Member of Open Access publisher BioMed Central which entitles VU and VUmc employees to a 15% discount on Article Processing Charges (APC’s) when publishing in journals of this publisher. Discount is granted when the “corresponding author” declares his or her affiliation to VU or VUmc.
The VSNU has reached an agreement with Brill on publishing in Open Access. Corresponding authors from the VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in 40 journals of Brill in International Law and International Relations. You can state your eligibility and request an Open Access publication during submission in one of the forty selected journals. Please note, for technical reasons, you will not receive confirmation that the costs are waived. More information about the procedure can be found on the Brill website.
British Medical Journal
The University Library has taken an Open Access Membership with the British Medical Journal so that VU and VUmc employees will receive a 25% discount off the Article Processing Charges (APC’s). They receive this discount if the "corresponding author" of the article is recognized as VU or VUmc employee.
Researchers of the VU and VUmc can now publish Open Access free of charge in the journals published by Cogitatio Press, an open access, academic publisher specialized in peer-reviewed journals. Cogitatio publishes four journals, Media and Communication, Politics and Governance, Social Inclusion and Urban Planning. VU and VUmc employees are recognized based on their VU or VUmc e-mail address at submission and will receive confirmation that the fee is paid by the institution.
Cambridge University Press
Researchers of the VU and VUmc can publish open access in 339 hybrid and 17 open access journals of Cambridge University Press.
The APC is waived after the corresponding author indicates his/her affiliation after acceptance. An ‘Apply Discount’ button will appear by which the OA procedure is confirmed. The agreement is valid from 1 June 2017 until 1 June 2020.
On behalf of the Dutch Universities, the VSNU has reached an agreement with Elsevier allowing Open Access publication free of charge in a selection of their journals. When submitting a manuscript, VU and VUmc employees can indicate their affiliation with a Dutch University and select an Open Access license from a list. VU/VUmc have a preference for the CC-BY 4.0 license. After this Article Processing Charges (APC’s) are covered.
The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) has reached an agreement with publisher Emerald about pre-paid institutional APC vouchers. Included in this deal are 30 vouchers in 2017 and 45 in 2018. If all vouchers for the current year are used, Emerald will place an announcement on its website.
Corresponding authors of the VU and VUmc should select the ‘my institution is elligible for a prepaid APC voucher’ option on the Emerald APC webpage during submission. If the article is accepted you will be sent an e-mail confirming the availability of the free voucher. After completing and signing the CC-BY license, the article is published Open Access. Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in 97 Karger journals. The authors must provide a cover letter at submission referring to their authorized status.
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in 228 hybride Lippincott Williams & Wilkins journals. Full Open Access journals are excluded from this deal. Please contact email@example.com to apply for a ‘waiver code’ once your article is accepted for publication.
The University Library has signed an agreement with Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). Corresponding authors associated with the VU and VUmc will receive a 25% discount on the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Open Access publications. VU/VUmc employees are recognized on the basis of domain and IP address. The agreement is valid from 1 August 2016 until 31 July 2018.
Royal Society of Chemistry
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc will receive a 15% discount off the Article Processing Charges (APC’s) for the journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). During submission, you will be recognized as a corresponding author of VU and/or VUmc by your institutional e-mail address. This deal is valid from 2017 to 2019.
The full open access journals Chemical Science, Chemistry World en RSC Advances are not eligible for the 15 % discount. For these journals a fixed reduced rate of £ 750 is agreed.
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in 900 journals published by SAGE. This deal is valid from 2017 to 2019.
During submission, you will be recognized as a corresponding author of VU and/or VUmc by your institutional e-mail address. It is therefore important to use the e-mail address of your institution on submission of your manuscript. The publisher will send you a personal message with a request to fill out a form and send it by return mail. The article is made Open Access without cost if SAGE receives the form in a timely manner. Articles cannot be made Open Access after publication.
On behalf of the Dutch Universities, the VSNU has reached an agreement with Springer to promote a rapid transition to Open Access publishing for all publicly funded research in the Netherlands. As a result of this, from January 2015 onwards, VU and VUmc employees can use the hybrid Open Access option “Open Choice”. This ensures publishing costs are covered. Journals from the Springer Open portfolio are not eligible for free Open Access publication.
Taylor & Francis en Routledge
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in ca. 2300 journals published by Taylor & Francis and Routledge.
During submission, you will be recognized as a corresponding author of VU and/or VUmc by your institutional e-mail address. It is therefore important to use the e-mail address of your institution on submission of your manuscript. You will receive an e-mail once your article has been accepted for publication with confirmation that the costs will be paid by the VSNU agreement. Walter de Gruyter
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish Open Access free of charge in hybrid journals of Walter de Gruyter. This does not include full Open Access journals. The agreement applies only to journals the VU University Library subscribed to. VU and VUmc employees are recognized based on their VU or VUmc e-mail address at submission.
Additionally VU- and VUmc-employees receive a discount of 20% on the publication costs when publishing in Open Access in one of the more than 500 full Open Access journals in the‘De Gruyter Open Access Institutional Member Scheme’. The discount also applies to book chapters and book series.
Corresponding authors of VU and VUmc can publish in Open Access free of charge in 1400 journals published by Wiley. This deal is valid from 2017 to 2018.
Once your article is accepted for publication you can fill out the ‘OnlineOpen’ form on the Wiley author services page and select VU or VUmc under Funder/Institution Payment. Once your eligibility has been verified, your institution will cover the article publication charge and the article will be made Open Access immediately on publication.
