How to find a book
To find the shelfmark of a book or printed journal, you'll want to search the library catalogue.
With each item you find the location (HG = VU Main Building; Medische bibliotheek = Medical Library) and shelfmark (e.g. HG 2e etage : [Selfservice 2nd floor] QA.11127.- ; Medische Bibliotheek : P.LPK: QZ 50). Please write down the complete shelfmark.
Publications in open stacks are marked "Selfservice" or "Reference only". Items in closed stacks are marked "Stack request".
Where to get it?
The shelfmark directs you to the location of the book: the floor (etage) in the VU Main Building (e.g. HG 2e etage) or Medical Library. The signs will lead you to the correct bookcase.
Publications in open stacks can be borrowed at the self service station or desk.
Closed stacks – Make a reservation!
Please note! To obtain books from the closed stacks (marked "Stack request"), you have to make a reservation. In the catalogue, click on the shelfmark for more information; click "Details availability" next to the shelfmark to make a reservation.
Books will be collected from the closed stacks at fixed intervals. See Reserving.
Your collection notice and "Your account / Renewal" will state the desk where to collect the item (see Desks, opening hours).
If a book is not present in the library, you can borrow it from another library via interlibrary loan (ILL).
Most books may be borrowed for a standard period of 4 weeks. Restricted loans such as exam books may be borrowed for a shorter period (1 day or 1 week).
Journals and reference works can be viewed in the library or borrowed for 1 day (to be returned the same day).
There are fines for overdue books (see: Returning items ).
Two days before the end of the lending period we will send you a reminder by email or through the post (if we do not have your email address). Note: This only applies to books with a loan period of 1 week or longer.
You may renew library materials up to a maximum of five times.
